Beach tennis was born in Ravenna, Italy in the 1970s. Legend has it that this fun, fast-paced, and dynamic sport was created when some tennis players on vacation decided to try playing tennis on an existing beach volleyball court.
Today, beach tennis has spread all across the globe and is growing at unprecedented rates, with communities popping up in all corners of the US and the world, from Florida, to New York, to California to countries like Brazil, Spain, Puerto Rico, Aruba, Japan, Venezuela and tens more!

What type of racket is used in beach tennis?
Beach tennis players use paddles specially designed for the sport. Beach tennis paddles have no strings and are made from Carbon, Fiberglass, Kevlar or a mix of the three. Beach tennis paddles are usually 50cm long, weigh anywhere between 300 and 350 grams, are filled with a foam core on the inside, and have holes for aerodynamic purposes.

What type of ball is used in beach tennis?
A beach tennis ball, which is essentially a stage 2 “low compression” or depressurized tennis ball. Certain beach tennis balls are approved by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), meaning that they can be used in official competitions of the pro beach tennis tour.

On what surface is beach tennis played?
You guessed it! Beach tennis is officially played on the sand, although we have seen it played for fun on grass and even in the snow!
The dimensions of a beach tennis court for doubles are 52 feet 6 inches (16.0 meters) long and 26 feet 3 inches (8.0 meters) wide. For singles beach tennis, the court is the same length but narrower at 14 feet 9 inches (4.5 meters).
The height of a beach tennis net is 5 feet 7 inches (1.7 meters) for pro women and juniors, and 5 feet 11 inches (1.8 meters) for the top-level pro men.
